Technics made a wide range of high quality recorders, many are modified to produce outstanding results, some like the RS-1800 require no such adjustments or upgrades. The recorder uses the same tier-drop head system as the 3M machines, the 3M's had great specifications but sadly the tension on the heads was too high and caused them to wear quickly, on the Technics however they managed to use the great tape path system without the unwanted head wear.
The recorder is fully logic, with a quartz crystal controlling the timing pulses for the capstan drive, though its a great machine I have found the breaks are very poor and will need replacing, most manufactures used cork as a break pad where the Technics machines have felt breaks.
